R.A. Reed Productions Builds Cold Sassy Tree for Houston Grand Opera

PORTLAND, Ore. – April 5, 2000 – R.A. Reed Productions, a Portland-based scene shop, recently built and loaded in a set for Carlisle Floyd’s "Cold Sassy Tree," a world premiere production by the Houston Grand Opera. The opera will debut April 14 and continue through May 6 at the Wortham Theater Center’s Brown Theater, located at 510 Preston St. in Houston, Texas.

Australian film director Bruce Beresford directs the production, while famed designer Michael Yeargan is responsible for the sets and costumes. Yeargan has designed extensively in American resident theatres, on Broadway, and for opera companies throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Houston Grand Opera selected R.A. Reed Productions to build parts of the set, including a 34-foot-diameter by 12-inch-high steel turntable, as well as the interior and exterior units of the main character’s residence and the town general store. The company and Yeargan utilized Photoshop to produce distressed, period posters that decorate a 70-foot-wide forced perspective fence that plays in one of the scenes. The realistic scenery consists of rolling platforms and flown pieces, all constructed from wood.

Based on Olive Ann Burns’ novel, "Cold Sassy Tree" is a step back in time to turn-of-the-century rural Georgia. The opera relays the story of opinionated sexagenarian Rucker Lattimore, who marries a beautiful young woman shortly after his wife dies, setting off a firestorm of controversy in his town.

"Cold Sassy Tree" is a co-production with Austin Lyric Opera, Baltimore Opera, Opera Carolina and San Diego Opera.

Reed Productions offers set design and construction and staging for the theatre, entertainment, concert, trade show and sporting industries. The company has executed successful set designs for the American Ballet Theatre, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Radio City Music Hall Productions, MTV Music Television, Metropolitan Opera and Washington National Opera. A division of the company focuses on building trade show components and scenery for large corporations including Microsoft, Tektronix, Intel, Kenworth Trucks and Sony Playstation.

R.A. Reed Productions is located at 955 N. Columbia Blvd., Building A. For more information call 503/735-0003 or visit www.reed-usa.com.
