Reed Productions Builds Colorful Set for Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Production of "Carmen"

PORTLAND, Ore. – Feb. 28, 2000 – R.A. Reed Productions, a Portland-based scenic company, built a vibrant and colorful set for
The Lyric Opera of Chicago’s presentation of the world’s most popular opera, George Bizet’s "Carmen." The opera opened Feb. 12 and runs through March 18 at the Civic Opera House located at 20 N. Wacker Drive in Chicago.

Set designer Robin Don is making his Lyric Opera debut with "Carmen," which is directed by John Copley. To achieve Don’s vision, Reed Productions built scenery consisting of a large bullring that measured 34-feet-high by 39-feet in diameter and 10-feet-deep. A series of double doors each measured 16-feet-high by 12-feet-wide.

Reed Productions offers set design and construction and staging for the theatre, entertainment, concert, trade show and sporting industries. This is the second opera set Reed Productions has built for Lyric Opera of Chicago; the company constructed the set for the 1998 production of Kurt Weill’s "The Rise and Fall of Mahagonny."

The staging and scene shop has also executed successful set designs for the American Ballet Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Salt Lake City Opera, Tacoma Opera and Washington National Opera.

R.A. Reed Productions is located at 955 N. Columbia Blvd., Building A. For more information call 503/735-0003.
